Prepare to be Surprised!
It’s easy to assume that wax is only used for things like candles and hair removal treatments. While those two things are probably the most well-known uses of wax, there are so many other applications out there, too. From beeswax to lesser-known types like candelilla, here are just a few surprising uses for the ones that we sell. As leading wax suppliers, we really have seen it all!
Furniture care
Want to keep furniture looking great and give it a layer of protection? Then wax is your best friend! Beeswax in particular is really good for this. You’ll find it in so many furniture polishes and other products, plus you can just use it on its own. By buffing it into wood, you’ll show off the natural grain and make the colour much more vibrant. Wax also helps to nourish the wood. It provides protection against everything from scratches to moisture, keeping it healthier for longer.
Food wraps
Another surprising thing is that wax is used in food! One of the fastest-growing uses for wax in the food sector is in reusable wraps. You’ve probably seen your co-workers use them, and the great thing about beeswax food wraps is that they can be used again and again. The warmth of your hands softens the wax, and it can then be moulded around bowls or things like sandwiches, thanks to its tacky surface.
Preserving food
Wax can be used in food in other, more subtle ways, too. The shine on the fruit that you buy in the supermarket? That’s wax! It also helps to protect against decay, which keeps food fresher for longer. It can be used in much more prominent ways, too. Just think of truckles of cheese that are coated in wax. So the next time you tuck into a Ploughman’s lunch, you have wax to thank for keeping everything delicious!
Chewing gum
Yes, really! Most of us don’t really think about what chewing gum is made from, but so many of us have a packet in our pocket. Wax is what gives chewing gum its pliable texture. Without it, it would probably be a lot less easy to chew and much less popular as a result. The most common wax used in chewing gums is candelilla, which is one of the most popular that we sell here at Poth Hille.
Waterproofing
Last but not least is something that we all rely on: waterproofing. From waxed jackets to protective coatings that we spray onto our shoes to ensure that they can stand up to winter weather, wax protects from moisture. You can buy items that have already been waterproofed with wax and then use specialist products to keep up that protection and prolong their lifespan.
